Despite popular belief, our founders name wasn’t Fred. FRED actually stands for Freshly Roasted Every Day, clever huh!

We’ve been around since 2000, when our founder Boyd fired up a traditional drum roaster in his garage. Because where else do great ideas begin? His mission was simple: fix the problem of stale, supermarket coffee by delivering something better — fresh, locally roasted coffee that doesn’t sit around on shelves. That’s why most FRED coffee is dispatched within 24 hours of roasting.

Unlike the big guys with reps on the road, branded umbrellas, and supermarket deals (you know the ones), FRED has always done things differently. We’re not trying to be the loudest voice in the room, just the best cup in your hand. Our goal has always been to make great, fresh coffee for everyday Kiwis.

In 2015, we got a bit bold and entered a competition, and walked away with New Zealand’s Best Espresso Blend for 2015 and 2016. Not bad for a garage-born coffee brand.

By 2022, we’d grown beyond our humble roots and joined forces with The New Zealand Coffee Co, a crew that shares our passion for roasting fresh, quality coffee. FRED now operates out of their Penrose roastery, powered by our own bright yellow roaster that’s as cheerful as your first morning cup.

Today, we’re still roasting fresh daily, delivering fast, and doing things our way with the support of people like you. People who value freshness, back local, and help keep independent Kiwi coffee alive and well.
